A 12 km from Fier, is located Apollonia, the most important archaeological centre of Albania.





In the mid-fifth century BC Apollonia was active to a laboratory to issue coins. Through commercial transactions these coins spread throughout the Illyria and beyond. In the second century BC Apollonia had a population of 55,000 inhabitants. In the first century BC Julius Caesar used this citadel as a fortress against Pompeii. As reward for the support given to Caesar, for Apollonia was granted the status of free city. Apollonia became a cultural centre, where art, architecture and sculpture flourished and prosperarono. At the same time Octavian Augustus (the first Roman emperor) and Agrippa (King of Judea), linked by close bonds of friendship, came to study at the famous school of Apollonia.
